These stories often begin in the Middle Ages. In some towns and villages, they emerge in the early modern period. Yet everywhere they come fully into bloom in the nineteenth century. The Jewish communities in the places we describe share much in common, though we also show their individual growth, dynamics, and the distinctive character unique to each setting and time.
